Queensland contingent ready to hit the track in Glasgow

Scotstoun Stadium takes centre stage on Monday as Australia's Athletics and Para Athletics team begins its Commonwealth Games campaign, with 21 Queensland athletes among those aiming to continue the nation's medal momentum.

The Commonwealth Games Athletics and Para Athletics competition begins on Monday, with 21 Queensland athletes set to launch Australia’s campaign at Scotstoun Stadium.

Queensland will be represented across the track, field and Para Athletics program as Australia fields a full-strength team aiming to build on the nation’s impressive start to the Games.

Olympians Matthew Denny, Michelle Jenneke, Reece Holder, Torrie Lewis and Ky Robinson headline the Queensland contingent, joined by sprint sensation Lachlan Kennedy, rising middle-distance runner Peyton Craig and long jumper Liam Adcock.

QAS-supported sprinter Calab Law is also set for his Commonwealth Games debut, with the proud Waka Waka man from central Queensland selected in both the men’s 200m and 4x100m relay. Law is one of five Indigenous athletes in Australia’s Athletics team, the nation’s largest Indigenous athletics contingent at a Commonwealth Games, and has set his sights on a relay medal in Glasgow.

Australia’s Para Athletics team will also feature with Nathan Jason, Ullrich Muller, Ainsley Hooker, Lindsey Hendy and Matt Sheppard among those chasing Commonwealth Games success.

The six-day Athletics and Para Athletics program features 59 medal events and includes five Australian defending Commonwealth champions, with the green and gold expected to challenge across the track and field.

Following Australia’s successful opening weekend in Glasgow, the nation’s Athletics and Para Athletics teams will look to maintain the momentum when competition begins on Monday.
