The World Wheelchair Rugby Cup is coming to Brisbane, bringing eight of the world’s leading teams to Nissan Arena from 25 to 29 October 2027 for five days of international competition.
The announcement is particularly significant for QAS-supported athlete Ryley Batt, with more than half of Australia’s current high performance wheelchair rugby athletes based in Queensland.
The tournament will be staged between the Round of 16 and quarterfinals of the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, bringing two major international sporting events together in Brisbane.
Organisers are aiming to attract the largest crowd recorded for a dedicated wheelchair rugby event outside the Paralympic Games, giving Australian fans the chance to see some of the sport’s biggest names compete for a major international title.
The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) is among the organisations that supported with securing the event in Brisbane, alongside the Queensland Government, World Rugby, Rugby Australia, Paralympics Australia and the Australian Sports Commission.
Wheelchair Rugby Australia CEO Chris Nay acknowledged the contribution of the QAS and other partners in securing the event.
“Similarly, the support of World Rugby, Rugby Australia, Paralympics Australia, the Australian Sports Commission and the Queensland Academy of Sport has played an influential role in securing this event. We are grateful to be working with such strong, values aligned organisations and look forward to delivering a record result for them in 2027.”
Chris Nay said bringing the tournament to Brisbane would also help strengthen the sport’s profile, create opportunities for athletes and the wider wheelchair rugby community, and contribute to Queensland’s reputation for hosting major international events.
The World Wheelchair Rugby Cup builds on the International Wheelchair Rugby Cup staged alongside the Men’s Rugby World Cup in Paris in 2023. That tournament featured eight nations and 96 athletes, with Australia defeating Canada 53–48 in the final.
With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, the 2027 event will add another international sporting competition to Queensland’s calendar and provide Australian wheelchair rugby athletes with the opportunity to compete on home soil.
