For the first time in the sport's history, Water Polo Australia will host both the men's and women's World Aquatics World Cup Finals, with six QAS-supported athletes selected in the 15-player Aussie Stingers squad.
Held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from 22–26 July, the tournament will feature the world’s top eight men’s and women’s nations competing for one of the sport’s premier international titles.
The Queensland contingent includes QAS-supported athletes, Abby Andrews, Charlize Andrews, Tenealle Fasala, Gabriella Palm, Alice Williams and teenage rising star Bless Daly.
Her selection marks another significant milestone in her emerging international career.
“Representing my country means everything to me. Wearing the green and gold is a privilege I’ll never take for granted, and to play my first World Cup on home soil, in front of my family, friends and the Australian supporters, is something I’ll cherish forever, Bless said.
“I’ll give everything I have for this team and for everyone who believes in us.”
Teammate and fellow Stinger, Alice Williams said she’s elated to have the opportunity to play an international tournament on home soil for the first time in her 10-year tenure with the Aussie Stingers.
“For young girls and boys to have the exposure of watching high-level international water polo is something I could only have dreamed of when I was their age, and I can’t wait to play in front of them along with my friends and family,” she said.
Both Australian teams will begin their campaigns across the opening two days of competition, giving home fans the opportunity to watch the national sides in action. The Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers will open the tournament with a quarter-final clash against Italy at 6:30pm AEST on 22 July.
Hosting the World Cup Finals on home soil provides a great opportunity for Australia to test itself against the world’s best as preparations continue for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
