QAS-supported athletes delivered a week to remember across World Para Swimming, Para Athletics, World Rowing and the Para Archery World Championships. It was a haul featuring a world record relay, multiple Oceania records, national marks and a string of finals.
Momentum built night after night since our last results wrap at the World Para Swimming Championships. The campaign sparked again on Night 3 when Jake Michel surged to silver, with an Oceania record, in the SB14 100m Breaststroke. Sprinters Lewis Bishop (S9 Men’s) and Emily Beecroft (S9 Women’s) snagged bronze in the 100m Butterfly to keep the momentum rolling.
By Night 4, Queensland’s speed was on full display. Callum Simpson claimed gold in the Men’s S8 100m Freestyle in an Oceania record, meanwhile Alexa Leary continued her dominance winning the Women’s S9 100m Freestyle. Night 5 stacked on even more medals with Lakeisha Patterson blazing to gold in the Women’s S9 400m Freestyle, Simpson dashed to silver, and the team capped it with gold and a World Record in the Mixed 34 Points 4x100m Freestyle relay.
Over on the track at the Para Athletics World Championships, Nathan Jason tore up the T12 100m record books, lowering the Australian Record to 11.06 in the Heats, and then again to 11.04 in the semifinal. Queensland’s oars also hit the podium at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, where Paralympic legend Erik Horrie secured bronze in the PR1 men’s single sculls.
From the pool to the track, river and range, these performances underline the depth of Queensland talent and the strength of QAS programs working with national partners to convert potential into performance.
