QAS helps launch world-leading recommendations for athletes

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has taken a significant step in supporting athlete wellbeing, helping launch new recommendations to guide athletes from preconception through to parenthood. Developed in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and CQUniversity, the AIS Best Practice Recommendations to Support Elite athletes from Preconception to Parenthood aim to ensure athletes are supported at every stage.

QAS General Manager Troy Ayres said no athlete should have to choose between sport and starting a family.

“The Queensland Academy of Sport has taken a strong lead in championing female athlete research, and this latest collaboration is a clear example of its commitment to driving progress in this important space,” he said.

QAS PhD Scholar Boden Tighe contributed to the recommendations, which were developed through extensive research and consultation with athletes, coaches, high performance support staff and medical professionals.

Queensland athlete Alyce Wood was among more than 60 athletes who helped shape the recommendations. Wood, a three-time Olympian (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024), competed in the K1 500 at 35 weeks postpartum at the 2023 World Championships, finishing fifth earning an Olympic qualifying spot for Australia.

The recommendations highlight that even sports with small budgets can make a real impact, including offering flexible training options, protecting categorisation or modifying uniforms.
