14 QAS supported athletes have swapped their gym towels for aprons to learn how to make the perfect coffee in a nationally accredited barista training course.
The course was offered to athletes to help them build skills to find flexible work alongside their busy training and competition schedules.
QAS Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement Practitioner Jaime Krol said: “We wanted to give athletes something really tangible that they could take away from today, put on their resumes, and hopefully get out there and get some employment that works with their sport.”
QAS-supported track cyclist Molly McGill said: “As athletes it’s super hard to find jobs that work around our time schedule and something like being a barista is something that you can work around.”
Flexible employment not only helps athletes financially but supports their mental health and wellbeing by providing balance and an identity away from sport.
