In a history-making moment for sport in Queensland, the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has launched the State’s first Para Sport Unit, ensuring more athletes with disabilities can chase their dreams on the road to LA2028 and Brisbane 2032.
Delivered in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Paralympics Australia (PA), the Unit will reduce barriers for participation and talent identification, enhance performance pathways, and develop world-class Para sport coaches.
QAS General Manager Troy Ayres said: “Our biggest goal is to more than double the number of athletes that are in the pipeline for the longer term. We want to create this groundswell of talent that is existing in the community that might not know there is a pathway to Paralympic sport.”
The Para Unit will create 16 full-time positions and approximately 40 athlete support positions. Paralympic bronze medallist Ella Sabljak said: “For young and emerging Para athletes, the new Para Unit at the QAS signals that their journey is just as valued, just as supported, and just as full of opportunity as any other athlete’s.”
