Queensland cyclists have hit the boards in style, helping Australia open its Commonwealth Games track campaign with a golden start in Glasgow.
Queenslanders Leigh Hoffman, Ryan Elliot and Daniel Barber powered Australia to gold in the men’s team sprint, producing a dominant performance to defeat England after qualifying fastest.
The trio clocked 42.455 seconds in the gold medal ride, finishing comfortably ahead of England to hand Australia its first track cycling title of the Games.
Queensland’s medal haul continued in the Para Track Cycling, with Jacquie Mengler-Mohr piloting vision-impaired cyclist Jessica Gallagher to silver in the women’s tandem B sprint.
Australia’s men also climbed the podium in the team pursuit, with Queenslander James Moriarty joining Olympic champions Oliver Bleddyn, Conor Leahy and Blake Agnoletto to secure silver after England produced a Commonwealth Games record ride in the final.
Queensland riders Kristina Clonan, Molly McGill and Alessia McCaig were also in action, qualifying fourth fastest in the women’s team sprint before finishing fourth after a closely contested bronze medal ride-off against Scotland.
The strong opening day continues Australia’s impressive start to the track cycling program, with Queensland athletes set to feature prominently across the remaining three days of competition as more Commonwealth Games medals go on the line.
